Liz Hickman

Legal Director - Medical Negligence

"I am a legal director in the medical negligence team. ”

Having joined Higgs as a trainee solicitor I qualified into the personal and clinical negligence team. Until 2021 I was a partner in the team specialising in medical negligence including delays in diagnosis, cancer cases, surgical and anaesthetic errors, fatal claims and catastrophic birth and spinal injuries.

I now work part time and concentrate solely on acting as solicitor to the inquest for the Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull in relation to the multiple inquests of patients treated by the former Consultant Breast Surgeon, Ian Paterson.

  • Successfully pursued a claim for anaesthetic error which led to cardiac arrest and brain injury
  • Advised on a number of cases where missed or delayed cancer diagnoses led either to worse outcomes for the patient or sadly early death
  • Successfully pursued claims for two individuals whose diagnoses of spinal tuberculosis were missed leading to tetraplegia
  • Dealt with a fatal claim where a heart condition was lost to follow up
