A special relationship formed over three decades

Article date:  17/02/2017

A relationship spanning more than 30 years has made for a very special working bond between two Black Country businesses.

Higgs & Sons Solicitors and Tipton based metal bending business The Angle Ring Company Limited have forged the kind of long-term partnership that is becoming increasingly rare in today's fast paced world of industry.

It is a partnership that both businesses showcase as an example of strength, loyalty and best practice.

Angle Ring's Managing Director, David Springthorpe, commented: "Higgs & Sons has acted for us since the 1980s. Only with that level of longevity are you able to secure the kind of insight, confidence and trust that our two businesses enjoy."

Like Higgs, Angle Ring is a family firm. David has worked there for 30 years, and his father Ray Springthorpe was MD before him. It was David's father, Ray, who first enlisted the expertise of Higgs when he worked with former Senior Partner, David Higgs.

Added David: "To share not only a Black Country heritage but also an ethos of strong family values is important to us, and in Higgs we have found a company with similar principles."

"We have always been pleased with the level of service we receive from Higgs, no matter which department we call on. They are accessible and approachable, they are local to us, always available either on the end of the phone or in person, and offer a high level of service and reassurance."

Higgs & Sons has acted for Angle Ring on several matters over the last three decades, most recently through Julia Lowe, Head of the firm's Dispute Resolution Department, and Carole Maddock, an Associate in the team, who helped bring a particularly complex matter to a successful conclusion.

Julia commented: "One of the challenges when working with a client is to get to the heart of that business and crucially its products. In order to secure the very best outcome for a client, it helps if we can tap into their DNA."

Angle Ring was established in 1951 and offers a bespoke bending service from cold bending small tubes and sections to the largest beams available and also induction bending pipes up to 914mm in diameter. They can also bend plate up to 200mm thick and press-brake plates 10m wide by 25mm thick

The company's cold bending and cambering machines, most of which have been designed in-house, enabled them to pioneer the bending of structural sections, delivering significant advantages over other production methods available at the time to produce smooth accurate bends whilst maintaining the section geometry; essential for architectural steelwork involving curved sections.

More recently, the company installed one of the UK's largest steel plate rolls at their production facility in Tipton.

Julia Lowe concludes:  "The longevity of Higgs' relationship with Angle Ring has allowed us to develop a real understanding of the business and what it is seeking to achieve both now and in the future. We look forward to this continuing over many years to come."
