Higgs & Sons choir in perfect harmony to win singing competition
Article date: 26/06/2015
Staff from a leading law firm hit the right note after winning a prestigious singing competition last night.
The Higgs & Sons choir were up against stiff opposition from some of the UK's largest law firms to win the Legal Harmony contest held at Southwark Cathedral.
The national competition saw five choirs compete against each other in the final, with Higgs being judged the very best.
"We are thrilled to have won," comments Nyree Applegarth, a partner in the firm and one of the organisers of the Higgs & Sons choir. "There were some pretty big names taking part in the competition and we were the only firm not based in London.
"To have beaten choirs from firms as world renowned as Norton Rose Fulbright and Herbert Smith Freehills really is an achievement."
The Higgs & Sons choir sang three pieces and the judges particularly commented upon the 'excellent quality of Higgs' singing' and the 'consummate professionalism in the presentation of its pieces'.
The 18 strong choir which represented all aspects of the firm from secretaries through to partners, first performed together in December 2013, and have been singing at various charity and social events ever since. They meet once a week to rehearse and currently benefit from working with conductor, David Emerson from the Birmingham Conservatoire. David's wife, renowned pianist, Catherine Emerson also from Birmingham Conservatoire provided the choir's accompaniment on the evening.
The singers themselves were not the only winners on the night, as the choir also used the competition to raise funds for the firm's chosen charity of the year, the Alzheimer's Society.
"Each year the firm nominates its charity of the year for which we undertake various fundraising events," explains Nyree.
"This year we are working with the Alzheimer's Society and singing at Legal Harmony was a great platform to not only raise funds for the charity, but to increase the profile of the organisation and the incredible work it does."
"All in all this was a real team effort from everyone involved and it is so pleasing that all our hard work has been rewarded by being crowned Legal Harmony champions."
