New group offers support to local Grandparents
Article date: 06/02/2015
A new group is offering support and advice to Black Country grandparents who may have lost contact with their grandchildren.
The UK has more than 14 million grandparents, the majority of whom enjoy close relationships with their grandchildren. However it is estimated that over one million children are denied contact with their grandparents, often due to divorce or similar breakdown of family relationships.
The Grandparent's Association is hoping its new group will offer support to those affected by this growing problem. The first meeting of the group is taking place in Kingswinford on 26th February.
"Over the years The Grandparents' Association has demonstrated the value of support groups for grandparents sharing their stories about loss of contact and also sharing tips on how to take the first step to resolve the situation whilst being with others who have been through the same, painful experiences," comments Lynn Chesterman, Chief Executive of The Grandparents' Association.
The support group which is set to meet every last Thursday of the month will be a place where Grandparents affected by family conflict can meet up to discuss their problems with others who may have had similar experiences. The group will be run by Hannah Nicholls, a family lawyer working as a volunteer for The Grandparents' Association who will be on hand to offer support.
"Unfortunately when parents split up there are occasions when grandparents are also affected and are prevented from seeing their grandchildren. The results can be devastating for all those involved, "she explains.
"If a grandparent is concerned that they are being prevented from spending time with a grandchild, there are a number of options available."
"Grandparents play a vital role in a child's life and the Court's recognise this. Provisions such as a 'Child Arrangements Order' may sound daunting, but they could be something to consider where other routes have failed to help."
The first meeting of the Grandparents Support Group will take place on Thursday 26 February between 10.30am - 12.30pm at Kingswinford Community Centre, High Street, Kingswinford, DY6 8AP. Subsequent meetings will take place every last Thursday of the month.
The group is free to anyone who would like to come along. Tea, coffee, cake and refreshments will be available.
