Primary School Re-opens as an Academy
Article date: 01/06/2012
A West Midlands primary school has re-opened earlier this year as an Academy with the help of a local firm of lawyers.
The governors and head teacher of Mesty Croft Academy, Wednesbury believe that converting to an academy will give them the autonomy, control and flexibility to implement new measures to improve the education received by pupils at the school.
Mesty Croft has always had a reputation for innovation and high standards of teaching as well as for putting the pupil and parental experience at the forefront of everything they do. The Academy conversion will enable the school to develop this even further.
The school was assisted in the conversion by a team from Black Country law firm, Higgs & Sons, Kate Legg from the commercial team, Jo Walker an associate in the firm's employment department and experts Philip Martin and Richard Honnick using their commercial property knowledge. Head teacher, Andrew Kirby, explained that one of the reasons for selecting Higgs & Sons was that not only did they offer the necessary expertise, but because they are a local firm, they will remain on hand to assist long after the conversion.
Associate, Kate Legg who supported Mesty Croft throughout the project explained: "Although Higgs & Sons can offer advice on a one off project, we prefer to develop long term relationships with our clients. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with Mesty Croft Academy and wish them every success for the future."
Mr Kirby added: "Higgs & Sons were tremendously helpful in our conversion to Academy Status. They dealt with all aspects of the legal transfer and we were delighted with their fantastic service. I would recommend them to any school considering converting."
The conversion of schools to academies has been one of the Coalition Government's flagship policies. One of the aims of the policy has been to take control for local schools away from Local Authorities and put it firmly into the hands of the parents, governors and teachers.
