£10,000 Charity Donation From Law Firm
Article date: 16/04/2012
A team from leading law firm Higgs & Sons has presented a cheque for £10,500 to its chosen charity for the last year - Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer (LFBC).
LFBC is a local cancer charity made up of a group of volunteers who have all been affected by breast cancer, through friendship, family or personal experience. Higgs has been raising money for the charity over the last 12 months.
Ian Shovlin, Higgs' senior partner, said of the fund-raising: "We are committed to working to raise money for our local community and LFBC is an excellent charity. Working locally gives our fundraising activities a real focus as well as an immense sense of satisfaction."
As part of its fund raising initiatives, the 200-strong Higgs team held events including a football tournament, golf days and its popular charity quiz.
Veronica Kumeta, LFBC's co-founder and chairwoman, is delighted with Higgs' achievements. She said: "It was a joy to see how Higgs brought together other local organisations and businesses to help raise money for our charity. For a cause that touches so many people, the money raised is a huge boost towards funding for much needed equipment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital."
As many as one in six women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, with 46,000 in the UK each year. The LFBC fund is spent on equipment to aid diagnosis, ensuring that Birmingham has a centre of excellence, in this field. There are other benefits too, excellent facilities attract excellent staff and aiding early diagnosis greatly improves survival rates.
