Higgs & Sons 6-11 SGH Martineau
"The beginning is the most important part of the work" Plato once said. Higgs & Sons' rebuilding process continued at Goals, Star City with their first game of the new BTSS Football League season.
Like Higgs' first game of last season, it was not the most auspicious of starts. However, this was a more competitive affair, unlike the 17-2 hammering dished out by one of the Birmingham Big Boys. Higgs had just the five players with new signing Patrick O'Connor (POC) making his debut in goal; Al and Slats at the back; and Joe and Ben operating interchangeably further up the pitch. Higgs were able to match Martineau's energy levels early on, but soon found themselves 3-0 behind. A couple were 'worldlies' and there was nothing that the Notorious P.O.C could do.
Ben got Higgs' first goal of the season making it 3-1. P.O.C then came out onto the pitch and Ben took over goalkeeping duties. Whilst Martineau appeared to have fewer chances, they began to resemble Manchester United as of late. Three chances, three goals. Their goalkeeper was not bad either, although not exactly David de Gea. Joe scored a couple of goals with his typical pinpoint accuracy before Ben came out and scored another one from Joe's assist.
Halfway through the second half (and with 25 minute halves rather than 20), SGH Martineau's superior fitness and substitutions began to tell as they pulled away. Team Higgs gave it their all and Joe added another brace to his tally, yet it was too little and too late as Higgs began their season with a defeat.
There were positives to take away from the game, most notably that Higgs were able to match one of the league's better teams for most of the time with only five players. JDC continued his fine scoring form and Higgs' new signing Notorious POC will surely prove to be the 'Big Poppa' in time, hypnotizing his opponents. His goalkeeping was solid - far from notorious - and on the pitch, he was involved in a few juicy tackles. Big money signings can take time to gel and initially it can be a case of mo money, mo problems, however Higgs are confident that like Biggie, P.O.C will be born again.
