Higgs & Sons 17 – 3 Shoosmiths

This was Higgs' second match in the space of a week and they named an unchanged line-up in Ben, Joe, Al, Rich and Cole. Joe started off in goal (after all, why take the engine away towards the end of a game), with Ben deputising after Shoosmiths got an early goal. That goal came when it was 2-1 to Higgs - the closest Shoosmiths came to parity as it was one-way traffic after that.

Rich continually peppered the Shoosmiths goal with shots, resulting in some spectacular long-range strikes going in, and this, coupled with his tireless movement ran the opposition ragged. Joe and Cole (Joe Cole) also got their fair share of goals, with Al chipping in a further contribution to the tally.

Shoosmiths were clearly rattled and the player who infamously said he would 'break' Joe last year (see final match report of last season) [BRJ1] was screaming at his teammates despite the fact that he was partly culpable for their downfall. The player in question was notably silent later in the match when a shot squirmed through his legs whilst in goal.

In a replay of last season, the match turned rather ugly towards the end when first, the player mentioned earlier had a run-in with Rich, and then a Shoosmith substitute emerged to immediately commit a particularly bad foul on Cole, who responded  by showing his feisty side in squaring up to the gangly sub.

As some of the players contemplated abandoning the match early, Captain Cowles persuaded everyone to play out the last five minutes, possibly with an eye on Higgs' goal difference. Such determination paid off as completing the game allowed the team to extend their lead, eventually running out 17-3 winners. So despite the drama, a healthy victory means that the Higgs team has now won nine games in a row.
