Graduate Recruitment

Out of the office and into 'the Dam'

Alastair DolmanAt Higgs, we are actively encouraged to get involved and participate in as many extra curricular activities as possible whether a social, sporting or networking event. Fortunately for me, in February this included a trip with the Birmingham Trainee Solicitors' Society (BTSS) for a weekend to remember in Amsterdam. This is an annual trip which all the Birmingham trainees are invited to attend and provides a great opportunity to meet other trainees from across the region.

Along with four others from Higgs, I arrived at the airport on Friday morning and met up with our compatriots who were from a range of firms across Birmingham. Once we had all been introduced, it was time to board the plane. Next stop; Amsterdam.

Having dropped off our bags at the hotel, it was time to get out and about and explore the city (and its pubs and bars!). After a few days of taking in the sights, enjoying the occasional Heineken, lots of the local food and absorbing the culture, it was time to head home for a Monday morning in the office feeling a little worse for wear!

The trip offered a great opportunity to get to know the other trainees in a totally relaxed and informal environment. This was a brilliant way to start to develop professional contacts for the future whilst making new friends at the same time. Following the trip, I am looking to run for a position on the committee of the BTSS next year which will provide the opportunity to take on a whole host of additional responsibilities outside of work. Higgs has had a representative on the committee for the last five years which really demonstrates how we are encouraged to get involved in activities away from the office and to develop our professional relationships.
