BTSS Annual Dinner
At Higgs, we are encouraged to get involved with the business development side of the firm on a regular basis. As such, I was elected on to the Birmingham Trainee Solicitors' Society (BTSS) committee in April 2013.
Eight months down the line and it is the day of the BTSS Annual Dinner, the largest social event in any Birmingham trainee's calendar. Being on the committee meant that I was involved with a lot of preparation in the weeks running up to the event, from getting pages finalised for the evening's programme, to staying up late into the night packing goody bags with my fellow committee members.
On the day of the dinner, I left the office at around midday to set up for the evening's festivities. My role as Sports Rep for the committee meant that I had to organise the transportation of all of the trophies for the various sporting events that I had run over the course of the summer to the venue. Arriving at the Birmingham ICC at 1.00pm, I was the first on the scene, liaising with the venue's co-ordinator to set up the room in the way we had planned.
A frantic few hours ensued, transporting the goody bags from a committee member's house to the venue and then placing them on every member's seat. We also had to organise the tables, programmes and table plans to name a few tasks, to make sure that everything was perfect for the guest's arrival.
Finally we were ready, which meant rushing home to put on my tux before heading back to the ICC for the main event.
I had an arduous wait during the meal before I gave a speech to over 200 trainees and presented the awards for the sporting competitions, something which was a great experience. After this, it was time to relax and enjoy the evening with my fellow trainees.
This day was a great experience during my training contract, from a morning of work, to setting up and presenting a speech at the biggest event in a trainee's business development calendar.
